• World Pinhole Camera Day – DIY Camera

Here I go again – pushing more film based content into a digital course…

You might find this fun – and a good reminder of just how far we have come from the very hands-on nature of photography as a craft at its inception.  I also think it’s hard to develop a playful experimental approach with the sort of modern kit we all use – too many buttons, too much investment, no direct contact or intervention…  Image making is simple and direct even though it is technical – I think a lot of the learning curve is about making the equipment transparent so you reach for the image you see without having to fight the kit.  so why not build a perfectly serviceable camera from cardboard?

If you want to have a go, let me know – I can find some empty 35mm canisters in the Institute.

And if you’re not taken by that, have a quick look at the competence that produces images like these:

It’s always a good idea to look outside the Anglo Saxon paradigm [?!] for good photography, and sometimes different approaches.  I keep hitting with you with scandinavian work: here are some others worth looking up.

This is intriguing – Norwegian photographer working with isolated communities. I particularly enjoy the surreal nature of this straight photograph.

You can find out more about his work on the Magnum website (apart from everything else in there!).  He has another approach which you might find interesting – making up long panoramic collages that describe the living space of a family.

You’ve probably heard this on radio -  have a look for yourself and work out how  you get equipment the size of a small pram across ice.

    Hi Folks

a quick reminder in case you missed previous email.

can you please all bring your workbooks in for next sessions – i want to do a group critique, and give you all a chance to share ideas and get some feedback – based on the marking criteria we discussed in last lesson.

i also want to make a start looking at printing and colour management, as well as planning what other photoshop/camera skills you feel you need to realise your goals – so please have a think and email me ideas of what you feel you need to cover or revise.

    Thanks

    Richard

    Hi Folks

In theory, the computer problems are [almost] over – virus eradicated, and USB/DVD etc will be OK to bring in once I have been trained in the dark arts of scanning your memory… I’m hoping to get a special session organised this monday, but no guarantee of that – if he can’t fit me in it will be friday before i’m allowed near USB.

On a different front, the AS/A2 exam themes have been released to the wild.  I had intended not to give them out until just before the easter break, but don’t want you to be disadvantaged, so will hand out when i next see you.  speaking of which, if i haven’t seen you for a bit, would you mind emailing me to let me know you’re still there, and to tell me how you’re getting on?
