Gear This is a private blog site to support the Photography AS/A2 classes I run in Bournemouth - I use it to share ideas, research, useful (I hope!) material, and point out good photography stuff on the web. When I can I will add other relevant content - exam materials, handouts, etc. If you can think of something that should be here feel free to let me know. Some pages may end up being password protected…. If you think you should have access to the site, please get in touch. Richard

Sorry about this week, folks – not what I had in mind in the grand scheme of things.  Plus ca change…

anyway – i would be delighted if you emailed me ideas, images, concerns, alternatives, quandaries and the like…. feel free!

Spotted this today – picks up on previous posts about photography and the law – it’s about Google’s Street View – which made me realise there is a direct connection to sanctuary here…

I wasn’t sure about this at first, but the more I think about it, the more I enjoy it – as much for the element of discovery and the need to really get to know the landscape in question as for the finished work.

Mark Klett and Byron Wolfe set iconic landscape images of the Grand Canyon national park – from William Bell to Ansel Adams – back into their wider context, often showing how images we know as individual, separate, are in fact adjacent, taken from the same spot at the same time…  I wonder to what extent that is a factor of the equipment used? I am finding that once set up, you don’t tend to travel too far from one spot with a large format camera (think bellows, etc), and do tend to look around for other shots from where you are.

Some recent stories to get you thinking…  I would be really interested to hear your views on these – remember you can add your own comments once you have logged in.  Why is it worth thinking about these things?  Remember the bits in the marking schedule that ask you to demonstrate awareness of artists’ concerns?  Photography’s freedom of action in this country might be considered under attack at the present.  There are arguments on both sides to take into account.  Does any of this have a possible link to Sanctuary?

and in a different vein, I caught this on radio 4 yesterday morning.  I’m including it here for you to ponder becasue the mother of one of the victims in effect said the work was fine until the identity of the artist was known – it’s this larger question i would like you to ponder. To what extent is the identity of the artist important in our response to a work?

This popped up in today’s Guardian – Gillian Wearing’s work fits into the stream of exploring identity, but I wondered to what extent that has a bearing on sanctuary.  A couple of you are looking at this from a very personal,  identity-centred idea.

There is a wonderful time lapse/image stitching photo in the centre spread, but can’t find it on-line.

Just a few from this weekend:

Lens Culture is an online magazine celebrating international contemporary photography, art, media, and world cultures.

    http://www.lensculture.com/index.html

Diane Ducruet’s work might be a useful starting point for Sanctuary, and there are recent articles on David Lachapelle, Russian and Turkish Photography – and some good street stuff.

The Guardian keeps championing photography – several good articles from William Eggleston to Martin Parr.  The Unseen: 25 years of press photography has some good stuff too.

bother – just spent an hour reading various articles…  links page worth a look too.
